Step by Step Process to Mount A Butcher Block Countertop.

Now you know all about the equipment. So, it’s time to get into the main segment. J

Step 1: Measure and Plan the Installation

Draw the cabinet layout and measure along the walls, sides, and cabinet fronts. Cabinets are usually 24-24.5 inches deep. Measure the depth from the walls to the cabinet doors from every place.

Once you have measured everything, it’s time to plan the installation. Usually, you will mount a straight-lined one but if you need a corner then you have to join 2 straight pieces with one another. There are two ways to join it- butt joints and miter joints.

Step 2: Remove the Countertop

Remove the doors and drawers before removing the old countertop. Now remove the countertop by using a screw gun and if it is glued then use an oscillating tool.

Step 3: Create the Template

There are so many angles that are u-shaped in the kitchen. That’s why you will need to make a template first. You can use 1/8-inch paneling or thin strips of straight cardboard to make it. Put the pieces in place and mark out the front, back, and corners. If you have a farmhouse sink then make a layout of it too.

Now, once you have marked everything then put the pieces together with hot glue. Lay the template on the countertop to mark the cuts.

Step 4: Cut the Butcher Block

Cut the pieces one by one and check the fit after every cut. Butcher block countertops usually come with an eased edge. You have to cut the edges to fit them on the flat sides.

Apply painter’s tape to the place you want to cut. The tape will keep the slab from getting any chips. Draw a line on the tape and then cut through the line. Use a saw guide to cut the slab.

Step 5: Sand the Rough Edges

Once it is fit you have to do the finishing process. For that first, you have to ease the edges. Use sandpaper to ease the rough edges. If you are using a router, use a 1/8-inch round-over. When you are using the router, keep the butcher block on your left and run the router forward.

Step 6: Connect the Slabs

There are a few ways to connect the slabs. You can use any method you like. I’ll show you 2 ways to do it.

You can use a pocket hole jig. It will make angled holes for the screws to keep the pieces attached tightly. You have to drill about every 6 inches. Ensure the screws are driven into the slab with a cross-grain.

You can use miter bolts to connect the pieces. You have to mark a line-up reference for the corner. Draw the marks for each miter bolt. Then use a router to cut 1/2 inch deep through the line. Set a high cutting speed and move the router slowly to create enough space to fit the miter bolts.

Step 7:Apply the Sealer and Install the Countertop and Backsplash

Before installing the countertop in your kitchen apply a sealer on it. You can use any sealer you like. Then when everything is ready to fit, apply a bead of sealant on the sink and put the countertop down in place. Secure the countertop in place with screws through the cabinet braces and brackets.

Once everything is set, cut the necessary holes in the countertop. Don’t forget to seal the bare wood. Now it’s time to install the backsplash. Add silicone or construction adhesive on the back and put it in the place. Use some weights on the pieces to hold them in place.

Step 8: Apply the Final Sealer and Reconnect the Plumbing

After you finished installing everything, it is time to do the side works. Apply the final sealer according to the manual. Use a lint-free rag for the finish coats. When the wood sealer is dried, apply silicone sealant along the walls, and the connecting places such as the backsplash and the sink. Once you have done this far, reconnect the plumbing and it’s ready.

Precautions And Warnings

Before you buy a butcher block you have to keep a few things in mind. You have to choose which kind of wood you need to use for the countertop and what are the backsides of butcher block countertops.

For butcher block countertops, the natural look is the beauty. First, you have to choose the type of wood. Then the grain styles. There are 3-grain styles

  1. Face Grain.
  2. Edge Grain.
  3. End Grain.

After that, you see there are some mechanical works. So make sure you are an expert/semi-pro here. Make sure to take protection for your eyes and ears. And my final tip is don’t hurry while going through the process.
